I went back to Nasketucket this morning, and for half of my walk I didn’t see anything special – tons of pearly crescentspots, and one spicebush swallowtail when I first pulled into the parking lot – but on the walk back, I spotted my first – and only – praying mantis of the year…

… and then one of my favorite butterflies – a great spangled fritillary – which I’ve only ever seen at Nasketucket…

… and then a giant garden spider. I haven’t seen one of these bad boys in years! I’d forgotten just how big – and, well, oogy – they are. But, as always, I’m thinking “Contest!”

I did some laundry at my mom’s afterwards. She has a butterfly bush that was popular with the painted ladies…

… and took a quick walk around the end of River Road, where I saw a great blue heron hanging out with a bunch of ducks.

Betty’s Neck

Ulysse’s friend keeps sending him home with magazine articles for me – some on wildflowers and wildlife, and others on places for he and I to visit, that we’ve never been to before. Today we went to Betty’s Neck, which apparently Henry David Thoreau wrote about about a billion years ago, and it’s just as beautiful now as it was back then (I assume!).

So, the sun finally made a re-appearance, and it was such a lift to my sagging spirits to get outdoors and take photos! I went to Buttonwood Park two days in a row, in fact – once before work on Thursday, and then again on Friday, which I took off from work because the weather was so nice.

Yellow

On Sunday we went walking in this preserve – I don’t remember the name of it – and the colors were just amazing: purple, white and just a ton of yellow.

Every bee in the world was there, feeding madly on the goldenrod. Brrrr!
